What is the NetLine?
The GamCare NetLine provides confidential advice, information and emotional support throughout Great Britain to anyone experiencing problems with gambling. The NetLine is an online text ‘chat’ service, where you can talk to an adviser by typing, and they will type back. You can access the service via a smartphone, tablet laptop or PC. As well as reading what the adviser types, you the adviser can also send you documents and links to read later.
How do I get started?
This service is currently closed. The NetLine is available to UK site users from 8am and Midnight, seven days a week.
If you are in crisis, or our service is unavailable, you can contact Samaritans on 116 123. You can also contact HOPELineUK from Papyrus if you are under 35, on 0800 068 41 41. In an emergency, always dial 999.
To start a live chat with an advisor, reload this page during the opening hours and click the 'start live chat now' button. You will be prompted to enter a username. When you have done this, it will open a chat window where you will meet with your Advisor and type messages to each other. This chat window is completely private and secure. Please note this is for people in the UK only.
If you are struggling to use the NetLine service, please call the helpline on 0808 8020 133.
Who will I be talking to?
You will be talking to a GamCare adviser who is trained to listen and help people affected by problem gambling. The Adviser will listen to you carefully and encourage you to talk about your concerns. Sometimes just telling someone can be a relief, and it is an important first step towards dealing with the problem. If you wish to address the underlying issues which drive you to gamble more than you want, the adviser may be able to help you do that too by putting you in touch with a local face to face counsellor if there is one in your area.
If you have a friend or family member who is a problem gambler, the adviser can suggest ways you can support the gambler and help them to seek help themselves if they are willing as well as ways to deal with the effects of their gambling on your own life.
How often can I use the NetLine?
You can use the NetLine as often as is useful, and take as much or as little time as you want to discuss your concerns. Some callers call just once in a crisis and get what they need right then, and others may require more and support to help them to manage their gambling.
Is it confidential?
Yes. The transcript of your call is saved on our secure database for quality and training purposes. If you wish to have your transcript, you can request it from us.
The team works to a standard code of practice, which includes strict confidentiality within the team. Advisers need to discuss their work with their supervisor, and may need to pass information to their colleagues, but no information about callers is disclosed to third parties outside the GamCare counselling team without your expressed consent.
Remember you don’t need to give any details that identify you during the call at any time, if you do not wish to.
For further information on confidentiality and Data Protection please see T&Cs and Data Protection.
Do I need to give my real name?
You will need to enter a ‘screen name’ in order to begin the call, but this does not have to be your real name. If you wish to give your real name then you can. This information will be stored on a secure database. If you decide to be referred for counselling, we will need to take some personal details from you. This will be explained during the call by the adviser.
Will you be able to see my location?
No. We are not able to see your location.
