What a terrible day outside. It is pouring of rain and bitterly cold. I was all ready for my run but decided against it which says a lot because I rarely call of for weather. Instead, I’m in a cosy living room with coffee and cake watching football.

Ive just read a diary where another member has had a setback and is in obvious emotional pain. Its hard. We’ve all experienced this horrendous turmoil. Setbacks, relapses - they are awful. I wish the member well. I hope for great things for him.

Big slap in the face this week. After looking forward to finishing on Thursday 17th for so long Ive been asked to work Monday, then it was Tuesday as well and now I’ve got something to tie up on Wednesday morning. Can’t complain I suppose - I have a job and work to do. I’ll appreciate finishing on Wednesday all the more.

Logged on to find that today is 450 without a bet. That is a long time. I don’t count days but it’s nice to see.

I bought a monster new soup pot today. It’s massive. I made a dynamite big pot of homemade vegetable and lentil soup tonight and it’s arguably the greatest homemade soup ever created. Ever. Crusty bread in abundance and I’m happily content.

One week until Christmas- exciting times.

So, work is just about done. I’ve got an hour to do tomorrow morning and no shirt and tie required so I’m not even classing that as official work. I feel like I’m on Christmas holiday and that makes me very happy.

Ive just returned from a five mile run. I’ve got 35 more to do this year to reach my target of 1000 miles. Next year my target will be bigger. I’ve had periods of injury and isolation this year but 1000 was my target and ive stuck to it. That is something that I do more and more since I stopped gambling - make plans and see them through. Before I was full of broken promises and false starts.

Ive been to the supermarket for the last time prior to Christmas Day. We’ve got everything we need and we’re very fortunate.

Im looking forward to a nice quiet Christmas Day with wife and kids. We will have a brilliant day together. I’m lucky in that regard. My wife and I bicker and argue like most but we can always talk and be happy in each others company. I know for most the thought of not being with extended family brings sadness and perhaps I’m just weird but I’m always happiest when its just me, wife and kids. They are my family and I’m looking forward to our day. The kids are super excited and its great seeing their happiness.

For everyone this has been a tough year but this year has also brought me happiness and hope for the future. My life in 2020 was definitely better than it was in 2019.

I had a fabulous Christmas Day. It was super from start to finish. The afternoon and night part of the day was so relaxed and chilled.

I made the dinner which was magnificent in my very humble and modest opinion.

The kids were super excited but as usual I was up before everyone impatiently waiting for noises coming from their bedrooms. That first excitement when they wake and see their stockings at the bottom of their beds - I love it. I’ve only got a few years left of this sadly. If only they could believe forever.

In terms of receiving gifts, I did very well. This is no coincidence. As a gambler I always asked for money. Not this year. This year I got proper things that I need and I got loads of great stuff.

Weve got enough chocolate in this house to open a shop. Its outrageous. My wife is having to hide some. I got the biggest toblerone I’ve ever seen. Its heavy to lift. Can’t wait to get started on that.

Hi RR,

A heart warming post & a clear demonstration of what recovery is all about. You got loads of chocolate, I got socks, boxer shorts in abundance. I gave presents too without having to beg, borrow & steal to buy them. Sounds like we've both had a wonderful Xmas. Can't wait for the next one.

Keep Going

Al

Thanks slowlearner for your kind words.

I got up in the dark this morning to run a half marathon. It was minus 1 degree and the paths were a little icy. I started off in the dark and finished in the light. Great stuff.

Ive got nothing to do all day now other than eat Christmas cake and Quality Street and lounge out like a beached whale on the couch watching TV. Nice.

Happy New Year All,

I started my new year with a long lie. Then I ran 7 miles and because of Covid restrictions ensuring we can’t invite anyone round for New Year dinner we’re getting a takeaway Indian for dinner. I’m also going to have a few beers and enjoy the day.

Im toying with the idea of setting a challenge of running 2021 miles this year. It is a big challenge and huge commitment and probably not possible but then again challenges should be challenging or what’s the point.

As previously mentioned, I’m quite happy with the current restrictions and I’m happy to have a nice quiet day in. Perhaps I’m weird but I like it. My parents and siblings are breaking the restrictions to have a family dinner. I said no and I’m happy.

Not posted in the past week. Not a lot of news really. I continue to do the same things. I’ve set new running challenges and I’m trying to get back to healthier eating which is not so easy with the amount of chocolate we still have in the house.

I return to work next week. I’ve loved my time off but I also look forward to returning to routine. Work hard and enjoy life.
