Our work with young people

2nd December 2016

This year GamCare joined the #GivingTuesday movement to raise the profile of our education and awareness work with young people and the frontline teams who work with them. Read more >>

International evidence consistently indicates that young people are disproportionately at risk of developing problems with gambling, as well as being harmed by problematic gambling in their family or friends circle. Despite this, very few under 18’s use GamCare’s support or treatment services, which indicates that there is more work to do to bridge the gap.

GamCare already sponsors a youth-specific website to provide information and advice about responsible gambling and problematic gambling, which we will be refreshing in the New Year after consultation with over 400 young people, however the foundation of our new strategy to support young people is our new outreach programme.

This programme was piloted in the South West with GamCare Partner ARA, and now we are fundraising to create three regional ‘youth hubs’ in Bristol, Birmingham and the North West (covering Manchester and Liverpool), as well as expanding our youth education services in London.

Our strategy focusses on education, awareness, treatment and communication. Our youth hubs will provide free of charge workshops and training in their local areas, as well as materials and screening tools to assist local youth services and teachers in identifying young people at risk. Each youth hub will also provide referrals to specialist treatment for young people who are experiencing or vulnerable to gambling-related harm.
