I'm Fundraising for GamCare!

18th May 2018

Our Youth Outreach Officer Megan is taking part in the Vitality London 10K on Monday 28th May, with a fundraising target of £200. Read more about why Megan is running for GamCare.

I run the Youth Outreach Programme at GamCare. I speak to hundreds of young people each year who have very little idea about exactly what gambling is – let alone the risks that go along with it, and where to get help if they need it. There is no statutory education around this issue, and many young people will leave school never having spoken about it with parents, teachers or advisers.

There are an estimated 430,000 problem gamblers in the UK. 1 in 5 of those with a compulsion to gamble will consider committing suicide because of the impact it has on their lives. The impact of gambling on problem gamblers themselves, their family and friends, is significant and often overlooked.

GamCare provide free, compassionate and non-judgmental advice and therapy to people facing difficulties because of problem gambling.

For many problem gamblers, the social stigma around the issue is one of the hardest parts of recovery. By tackling the issue with young people, we aim to dispel the stigma around this issue, and prevent the prospect of harm further down the line.

I am running 10K on the 28th May to raise awareness around this vitally important issue, and to raise some money to contribute to our outreach services. As a charity, we fundraise to deliver everything free of charge, so the people who need our services most can get help. Your donations will make all the difference to young people knowing about our services, and showing you care means a lot to the people suffering because of this issue.
