I have been asked to write a short tribute to GamCare member Phil Mawer who has been tragically killed whilst working in Africa.
Phil, 59, originally from Taunton in Somerset had worked as a project manager in many countries around the world. His work had taken him to many hostile environments including Mozambique where for the last 18 months he had been employed by a company providing living quarters for foreign workers. Security on such projects needs to be set at a high level necessitating working in secure camps.
On the 26th March this year his compound at Palma in the north of the country was attacked by armed ISIS-linked insurgents. Phil and some of the other workers in the camp attempted to escape to the coast in a vehicle convoy but were ambushed outside the gates by the gunmen. Several people were killed and sadly Phil was amongst them.
Phil had not been an active GamCare member for some time but older members will remember his well-received book “ Overcoming Gambling : A Guide for Problem and Compulsive Gamblers “ which proved to be a great help to many on here. Phil himself had suffered and overcome gambling addiction and through his book sought to help others.
Our thoughts go out to his family at this desperately sad time.
