Psychedelics and treating addiction

Has anyone used psychedelics to overcome their addiction? If so, what was the outcome?

There's plenty of anecdotal evidence and research from pilot studies which shows how effective psylocibin, LSD and ayahuasca can be at treating a variety of addictions. Finally the unfounded taboos are being lifted and meaningful research is starting to get underway.

LSD and MDMA have potentially massive theraputic benefits when administered under clinical conditions. (And ONLY under clinical conditions, not just buying it off the street and self-medicating).

I agree it's a shame that "society" allows adverts for alcohol and gambling without any sort of censure, but the minute you talk about psychadelics in a clinical setting as a route out of addiction those same people will shart their britches and say "ban ban ban".

It's a shame, but I guess the world just isn't ready yet.

Hope you are doing well in getting over your gambling addiction.

Best,

Molehole

Thanks - so far so good. Since coming clean with my girlfriend I'm feeling incredibly positive. I have an initial counselling session on Monday and am going to do all I can to make sure I don't slip back into old habits.

Agreed - the liberty with which bookmakers are allowed to advertise is insane in a world where cigarettes are now locked behind cupboard doors and useful compounds still subjected to the same age-old taboos (not to mention the ludicrous 'war on drugs' and all that entails).

Whilst I wouldn't ever condone self-medicating, I am an advocate of psychedelic exploration and certainly understand the therapeutic potential [in a clinical setting]. The mechanisms are slightly different but psylocibin's success in treating smoking addiction has been unparalleled, albeit only in small studies to date.

Ayahuasca is perhaps the one which is most likely to point you in the right direction under the guidance of a good shaman. I'm hoping to have the opportunity to give it a go before too long.

More power to you my friend!

It sounds like you know your stuff when it comes to psychadelics - I recommend the book PIHKAL (Psychadelics I Have Known And Loved) by Alexander Shulgin if you're not already familiar with it. Fascinating read! (Nothing to do with gambling addiction though, so I guess I'd better stay on topic! πŸ˜‰

Best of luck for your session on Monday. Gambling is such a boring and dirty buzz, really, when compared to other buzzes out there! If you must have an addiction at least make it an interesting and mentally rewarding one, rather than sitting there feeding £20 notes into a machine in return for flashing lights and spinning wheels/cards - that's what monkeys are trained to do in return for a peanut, etc!!! (That's what I remind myself whenever I feel tempted, like right now).

Keep strong and real.
