Ok, so does anyone have any good distraction techniques that they find very helpful that I could try ☺

Things like going for walks, gym etc are no good for me right now as I can't really chance going out due to ongoing physical health problems.

But if anyone has anything at all they find helpful, dosent matter how small it may seem, would you like to share, so I can try please.

Gambling online isn't as much of an issue thanks to Gamstop (even though I have tried, but failed to sign up) but Facebook raffles and scratchcards are driving me nuts. It's the urges too. And the way I'm feeling mentally, so if I can try something that just might work for me then great.

Thanks

Stace

I like doing jigsaw puzzles. I got one recently that was like a murder-mystery thing that you read a story then do the puzzle to figure out whodunnit. Alot of fun. I play COD on my playstation. I play Pokemon but that involves walking about alot I guess. Um, Nintendo have brought out a free version of Mario Kart in the playstore. So that could be fun.

I bought a paint by numbers kit recently. It's relaxing not to have to think about what you're painting, just colour by the number. Very good distraction.

It's good to see you posting.

I think you distract yourself more than you realise stace...christmas shopping you did other day is a distraction..looking after your children or even cleaning is a distraction.

Nothing will totally get your mind of thoughts I find it worse if I think I'm distracting myself so I dont think of it as that now I just try to do something like switch tv on or force self to start cleaning even if dont feel like it because it distract more than you realise.

Hi Stace86 and welcome to the forum

I would say that its about a born again moment where you feel a pure relief to be entering recovery.

I hope you are aware that its not just about willpower and finding distractions. Your blocks will need to be rock solid and monitored by your loved ones.

I cant stress enough that this is not about doing a jigsaw to distract yourself unless you have already properly restricted access to cash and locations.

The sheer power of this addiction will laugh at minor distractions unless you have built the foundations from square one.

It will take cold turkey as your mind heals. You may think of gambling but you wont be able to do it and thats what you need right now.

you need to spend some time doing the exercises...talk to a loved one..... try and explain a gambling session, write down your losses and hand it to someone because you need constant reality checks from people who see gambling clearly for what it is

I could give you a thousand fun things to do but they wont mean much unless you are deadly serious about ending the control this addiction has over you.

The urges will fade but it will take all the help you can get

Its about finding yourself again and you will have enough to do just doing that. You need to do some soul searching and find out why you were vunerable to the most dangerous addiction and indeed drug addiction that I know.

I talk tough because its what you need, Have you told your family? Is someone controlling your cash?

You aim is a serenity and thinking time so perhaps you could find something spiritual to experience deep thought. Yes by all means keep busy with fun things but it goes a whole lot deeper than that during recovery.

Best wishes from everyone on the forum
