Hello,

I have been in recovery for a number of years. Yesterday, something came over me and I relapsed. I found myself able to deposit on an online casino using Paypal and it accepted my credit card. I'm now hundreds of pounds down.

I know the ban for credit card gambling came in 2020 and I've just realised it extends to wallets (PayPal etc). Can I fight this with the online casino or take it straight to the Gambling Commission?

The first thing is to accept the relapse, I am being kind to myself but I am so angry that this was allowed to happen especially since the ban has been in place for 2 years now.

Any advice appreciated, thank you.

Getting the Money back will not solve the problem , i hope you do but it still don't take away the fact you relapdsed and that is far more important, if you didnt relapse then you wouldn't have the problem of trying to get the money back.

i have found people lletting me off debt didnt help me as you don't feel the pain of Losing in which my opinion helps you actually stop Gambling.

Best wishes.

Hello HA and Welcome.

Your main focus is that this addiction can urge you on you relapse at any time if you become complacent about it. The compulsions or urges can seem quite casual because that is how the addiction plays with you. It makes you think you have some control and it's a sensible decision to have a little go. In that moment it's told you all sorts of things like you are missing out and there is money to be made.......which is in reality all nonsense to get it's drug fix

I say this not to be unkind but because I care about you.

You have experienced how a door was open allowing you to gamble and the truth is that you have had to put some effort into seeing the site and registering the cards.

You've been done again because NOTHING is on offer. You can essentially lose every time so what are they offering you to boost your income?

As long as you realise that getting your money back on a technicality is a lesser issue to the problem you have. I understand the addiction and am not saying its all your fault. However you have carried out your actions and have to take some responsibility to face the addiction.

My fear is that deep in this complex addiction you were thinking there is a chance you will get refunded as you knew it was all wrong with credit cards and PayPal from the start. Its similar to well my parents will bung me another few hundred so I'm not losing

The gambling dens/gambling commission are no angels and your credit card and PayPal are finance companies. They don't offer a compassion caring or counselling service. You will only get your money back if they feel legally liable which is going to be difficult to prove. You are going to have to go down the line of informing them you are an addict and it will take some formal letters

Even if you did get your money back you need to beat this addiction or it's all pointless

I hope you can tell family and step up proper blocks which honestly you don't fully have at the moment

Best wishes for a gamble free future

Hi hopelessaddict111

Let's imagine they gave you your money back. They wouldn't give you cash in hand, they'd refund it to the card used to finance your gambling. Ask yourself honestly, would that make you stop ?, I doubt it. You say you were in recovery for a number of years, can I ask what blocks you put in place like self exclusion through Gamstop. How come you even have a credit card ?.

You say yesterday something came over you, that's the nature of addiction, Every day something comes over CGs. It's important to realize if an addict wants to gamble he or she will find a way. There's no shame in admitting you're an addict, it shows intent that you recognize you're not in control of the addiction & want to do something about it. Forget about about legal battles with gambling dens ( chances are you'll loose ). If you want to change your life for the better think more about restricting your access to finance, be it by cash or credit.

Sincere Best Wishes

AL

Save yourself the stress of trying to recover it because it's most likely it will get lost somewhere else. Put the effort into your recovery.
