We are not designed to defend our subconscious against these ads. They are basically programming our brains all day long. The industry knows this that is why they pour billions of pounds into it.

If you want peace. Turn of the TV during the breaks. Turn of the radio of as well. Learn how to do that. It is the only way to get some peace from it.

You have to take these precautions because they wont.

I wish you well!

Best

Hi Ruth,  sorry your going through this but your not alone,  I struggle myself as do many people.

Advertising has tempted people who haven't gambled to take there first bet , you may have heard of the story of a man who lost a million pounds from a free £5 bet. Its not your fault.

C43h has given some good advice,   you can't stop advertising but you can limit the amount your exposed to.

I'm guessing your on gamstop self exclusion, that will help massively and it's good that you are seeking treatment. I wish you all the best.

I haven’t been affected by adverts as my gambling was on Facebook. BUT, now I’m aware, admitted to myself I have a problem and came clean to my husband, I feel like I hear stuff about gambling all day and everyday!! I wasn’t aware of it before - it’s so strange how the mind works.

Hi all

Thank you Tigger37 for asking this question.

You might find ad-blocking software helpful to avoid gambling ads around the internet.

From your previous posts it sounds like you've self-excluded from gambling sites individually. Joining Gamstop can help because it will exclude you from all UK gambling sites and over time it should reduce promotional emails. You might also find this guidance from the Gambling Commission helpful:

https://www.gamblingcommission.gov.uk/public-and-players/page/how-can-i-stop-getting-gambling-marketing-texts-and-emails

Finally, just a side note to say we've moved this topic from the Recovery Diaries section to the Overcoming Problem Gambling section. Recovery Diaries is where you can update us on your recovery journey over time. Overcoming Problem Gambling is a space for support, advice and ideas about specific topics related to gambling recovery.

If you would like to start a diary, just head to the Recovery Diaries section and start a new topic. Give it a suitable title such as Tigger37's Diary or whatever you like.

Look forward to following your recovery.

Best wishes

Deirdre
