Hi Everyone,

I’m 22 years of age and very lucky to be in the position that I am. Not only do I have a secure job but I have also caught my gambling addiction early and want to help people similar to my age.

I first gambled as soon as I turned 18, at 18 in the space of 2 weeks I lost every single penny I had and was in £1000 debt (£12k loss in total) and promised i’d never gamble again. Consequently from this i completely changed my life for the better, I was more motivated than ever and managed through hard work to land a job paying nearly double what I was at the time and hold a well respected job even at my young age, something I am extremely proud of. Nearly 4 years to the day that i promised never to gamble again I caved in...

Just after Christmas time after a few drinks I signed up for a betting website and nearly lost £6000 but managed to win it all back, a month later i continued to gamble and won close to £2k in a month, little did i know, this feeling of being invincible wouldn’t last forever. Last week i contracted COVID and had to isolate, the first day of isolation I felt bored and found myself on gambling sites checking tennis odds. 24 hours later my £2k winnings and another £5k was gone. I was gutted and felt like i had let myself down however remained positive.

Not even a week later (about 2 days ago now) the feeling of the loss got to me and i’d come up with a “‘masterplan” to win it back, quite clearly i didn’t win it back and lost an additional £2.3k, so in total this is a £7.3k loss. Though I’m angry and disappointed in myself I also feel a sense of relief. Luckily for me when i first lost 12k back in 2018, any savings i made i put into an account which i couldn’t get access to plus i have invested in crypto currencies. The £7k i lost is a hell of a lot of money which i could of used for other purposes but it has served as a strict reminder to myself, the bookies always win... Due to lockdown the 7k i’ve lost is pretty much a result of everything i have saved over the last 5 months, which if you look at it like that doesn’t seem to bad and makes me feel a hell of a lot better. Not only this but I have around another 34k saved up in other accounts, so at 22 that isn’t bad at all. I do believe there is someone or something looking over you when gambling. I’ve honestly had the worst luck you’d ever imagine, it’s crazy if i was to go into detail about it.

I do also realise my situation is absolutely nothing compared to some of the stories i’ve read on here so like the title states, what goes around comes around... i’ve gamstop excluded from gambling now and want to help people who find them in similar situations to me, i can handle and afford my loss but i want to reach out to people who feel like they can’t so i can give them good advice going forward. The bookies always win.

Thanks for your time.

Hi, thank you for sharing.

I agree winners will always try to chase that high again but lose more in the long-term. its not worth it to do it again tomorrow or any time in life. Please keep contributing, we need to stay responsible during these hard times 🙂

Thanks for your message. You are completely right. From your username I can gage you have an interest in the stock market? Similar principles apply really, I for one have been invested over lockdown in the stock market and of my 7k loss nearly 2k of this is from the stork market. I have really come to terms with my loss and since my last bet haven’t even thought about going on a bookies app so i’m really proud of myself. I’ve reached out to a couple of friends and it’s taken a weight off my shoulders. Anyone who feels alone or wants to talk, my messages are open.

yes, stock market is very volatile and not something for the short term. I do like to see what is happening in the economy though :). I feel like I have a lot of time now so I do try to learn new skills online.
