In my experience with gambling charities why is it when you are looking for help and support from people within the charities that most have never had a serious gambling addiction so they can't empathise or understand the misery and devastion the addiction causes. Having people that have a degree and read a text book is OK but having somebody that has been an addict and came through it would be so helpful.

Hi 1corvus1.

Forums like this work as posters can give their insight into the battle they have had.  They also dont work as there is no 'one solution fits all' and one posters solution/journey may not resonate.

Counsellors in charities have often gone through training that gives a broad experience of mental health conditions. and their approach is to heal the person as oppose to your specific addiction/stresses.

Just because your doctor hasnt had Ebola doesnt mean he cant cure you.

It is like going to the doctor. There are bad and good ones. Sometimes you need to get more than one opinion before you can decide what to do. Point is never to give up in your quest for good counselling. It took me years to find a good match. Years so its hard work but it can be done.

Very good response from HertsC. And yes there is no solution universal for all. Usually there is a reason why ppl go gambling  same goes for people that have stopped. The reasons are not the same for all. Gamblers are not all the same. For me was depression, disapointment, anxiety. You would think that it gets you a bit away from your worries and maybe if somehow you won a lot of money you would be happier. The thing is when you have money your life might be comfortable a bit more. But you need to be happy for other things in life already. But only the money is nothing  How many billioners have commited suicide)? Gambling really messes with ones head. You stop appreciate hard work, intelligence and knowledge. I have been 2 years gamble free. In the beginning I really missed the time and the thousands lost. But the human brain is powerful and can be reprogrammed . With effort. Be well
