I'm a gambling addict. It happened several years ago and I thought it was just a phase that I beat. But it came back and I've lost far more that I could ever afford. Tens of thousands. I've lied, deceived and stole.

It's been going on for 2 years and I finally broke down. I couldn't eat or sleep and contemplated taking my own life. I didn't and made the tough decision to tell my family. They've been so supportive. Especially my fiancee.

I owe so much money. I've hurt everyone around me. I've deceived everyone. I don't know why I gamble. Sometimes I don't even remember doing it. I have no idea how I lost so much. Everything is such a blur and I can't make sense of it. I can't see a way out of this situation and I need help.

Hi Mr Lyndhurst

A famous poet wrote " there is a crack in everything, that's how the light gets in"

A chink of hope which promotes change and progress in your life

You are beginning to see that light and there is a way out of the darkness.

With a full recovery you will learn why you gambled and why it is a drug addiction above all else.

You've started well by telling your family...tell them again and keep talking it through...they can help by protecting your money and giving you a small allowance only.

There is help to put the past behind you. You need to realise the power of the addiction you have and make it history through the recovery process.

Right now you will be confused but I promise you the mind does heal and you will look at this a different way in future.

You have to be fully ready though for the cold turkey, moral support and financial advice you need.

You need to start again building foundations. Its not about treating you like a baby...its about saving your life!

Step by step you need to follow the advice and build up to a gamble free life.

You've been honest there so there is great hope...Honesty and openness are your saviours. There is no shame in admitting to this. You are one of millions affected by this deadly drug addiction so you are not alone.

Your mental health and your loving family come first. The debts can only be paid at a rate you can afford. You have a journey to do starting with strong foundations.

Give up the trust in you...you really dont want that now! What you need is help. love and moral support.

Its a sandwich allowance for you so get used to providing receipts and telling people exactly what you need money for. Get used to people monitoring you...its because they care. You have had an ill relationship with money so its best away from you.

Talk it through...we have been there

Believe me your gambling sessions will sound like a story about aliens at the bottom of the garden to a non gambler. They only make sense to an ill and addicted mind. Nothing clever about gambling..its a mugs game and a strong hook to addiction

Reality check after reality check is what you need

You will heal with help and it takes a while for your confused mind to clear...then it will start the healing process

Best wishes from everyone on the forum
