Made it to 12 days then gambled today. Realise I'm more vulnerable at the weekend. I've got a pot and am putting in a pound every day I don't gamble. Ive decided not to take the 12 pounds out but I have put in a slip of paper with today's date and -£120. I will stay calm, I will carry on this road, I will be ok. Good luck everyone. Here's to £13 tomorrow and no more slips of paper. X

Hi Annie,

Sorry to hear about the relapse.  I’ve posted on Stephens diary so won’t repeat myself and bore everyone. All I’d say though is it’s a shame, but not an amount that will hopefully have too much impact. Well done for not letting it turn into a major relapse, don’t try and win it back, and well done for getting straight back on here. I know it must be disappointing going back to zero, but you’ve still come a long way from your first diary (which i’ve just flicked back over).  Just try and think about what you can do differently next time, so you don’t have to reset the counter! Thanks Stephen and Rich. I'm actually feeling positive today. Ran 12k this morning and have just worked out that if I can not gamble til 19 November 2022 then that will be 1755 days which is how long I have been a compulsive gambler for. Anyway, whether that is achievable or not we will see. I just read an interesting article in a running magazine about treating willpower like a muscle- the more you use it the stronger it becomes. Thought that this is true with gambling - it talks about if you trust your will power then when obstacles present themselves, e.g for me a few spare quid and time on my own with access to online, then you will trust your willpower to overcome. I haven't got any money til payday anyway but I don't want to gamble today. Stephen I'm so sorry to hear you have relapsed too, January is a very difficult month I think and we will soon be out of it. Don't beat yourself up and keep going forward. X

Day 4. £4 in my pot. Payday today but that feels ok. Will withdraw all surplus money after bills as cash so no access to online money. Yes I've messed up but i am ready to be gamble free.

Hello Annie. Here we are 4 days since we last gambled. We really must give it all we've got this time because gambling destroys our happiness.

Very impressed with your running. I imagine it is great fun, stress busting and it will keep you fit. I believe exercise is a great way to get rid if stress and improve our sense of well-being.

I am so pleased that I never gambled online. That must be horrendous to be pestered 24/7 by thoughts of gambling. Money in the bank for me is ideal but a pocket full of notes would be a big temptation and best avoided.I put £80 on my Asda gift card today so I don't need to carry much money around.

Take care Annie. I do so hope we can stick it out this time. Our lives will be far far better for not gambling...stephen   x

Thank you Wilsy and Sunshine. It's great to get to day 10 although every day I do have thoughts of gambling - especially when work feels stressful. But I will try and stay strong. Stephen please don't apologise, it's so so so hard sometimes and when we feel low and vulnerable it is sometimes beyond us. As I posted on your diary - the overall number of days gamble free over the last year is amazing - they may not all be consecutive but that doesn't mean they don't count. They do. Take time and be kind to yourself. Xx

Thank you!  Day 12 fine with no gambling but have made myself feel ill on my consumption of choc eclairs (the chewy variety). When I stop gambling my weight goes up as think I eat to fill the void. Never mind. Day 12 completed of no gambling just got to join a gym or something. x

I can see you up there 9 days ahead and you look amazing. It's a funny thing but I keep picking up chocolate eclair wrappers!!! Only joking, there is nothing wrong with treats and sweets as long as your exercising and eating a balanced diet.

Take care my friend....stephen. x

Congratulations Annie on 20 days gamble free. A rock solid start to a happier, playful life of fun and adventures.

Glad your keeping fit and enjoying your running. You mentioned maybe joining a gym. If you go online most gyms will give you a free day pass to try out the facilities.

Joining a gym was one of the smartest moves I  ever made. I am a member at DW gym in Hull. My membership is £29 per month and includes the gym plus a wide variety of fitness classes and a large pool, steam room and hot tub. I have got to know many people there so it also a place where I can socialise.

It is more rewarding than feeding £29 into a hungry fobt machine every month.

Take care. X

Hi Annie,

thanks for posting on my forum, your support and kind words really help me.

Congrats on a huge 20 days gamble free which really is an achievement and you are doing it, you are winning. This early into our recoveries we will have thoughts and urges, it's just important we don't act upon them and you aren't, you are ignoring them so well done.

Have a wonderful day and weekend.

Thank you Stephen and Wilsy. I did try a class last night that could pay for without joining and my legs are killing me today. I was exhausted before I went but as soon as I got there I felt energised - probably because I was nervous! So I think it maybe something I do join. Totally agree that it is money well spent. The last two times I gambled I lost over £400 in total and only stopped due to no more money so that would be gym membership for a year. Shows how crazy gambling is as I would have to be really sure about paying such a huge amount of money for a gym but don't think twice with gambling. Onwards and upwards!! We can all beat this. X

12k run in the sun today and no gambling. Thoughts of gambling came but not acted on. Car MOT and insurance on the horizon and need enough money to pay however much it is. It failed last year so often not a cheap affair. I will not gamble tomorrow. X

Hello Annie. So pleased you tried out the gym. If you visited 3 or more times a week it is great value for money.

Loads to do in the gym, or swimming, and plenty of classes to choose from. I tried Yoga, Pilates, Zumba, Salsasize, Body Combat, Body Pump, Tai Chi etc etc. Great fun. You can try things and find out what suits you.

You get to know people quickly enough and it becomes a social thing as well. All air conditioned so your not breathing in pollutants.

Swimming around a pool, or working out, has got to be better than mindless gambling. And it is also a lot cheaper.

Wishing you a good week ahead...stephen x

Hello Annie, I’ve just been reading your diary this morning. Firstly, congratulations on 23 days gamble free. Keep it up girl.

I, too, am a runner and I can safely say that it does help massively when trying to steer clear of gambling. I’m restarting my journey to freedom and I hope to always be 22 days behind you.

I’ve set myself 5 goals for 2018. A financial goal, a running goal, a weight loss goal and a couple of lifestyle choice type goals. As well as the obvious goal of not gambling this year.

I need to give myself something to go for. Something for me to focus my mind on and take it away from the evils of gambling.

Best of luck in your journey ahead. I’ll be there all the way.

Dan

Thank you so much Stephen, Determind Dan, and Wilsy. Your posts are so supportive and although I've had thoughts of gambling, your comments have spurred me on to a gamble free Monday and hopefully Tuesday! Can't believe you tried all those classes Stephen - they sound amazing - my legs are still a bit stiff from my Friday class. Dan good luck in all your goals - certainly running or exercise of any type is a huge benefit for my mental well being. Good luck to you all on your journeys. X

Hi Annie, thanks for posting to me, yes mum owns a house in Toulouse, I have never been so that has to be my target this year to go and have a week away.

Congrats on Day 24, why do you think you want to gamble today, do you feel down, bored, seeking excitement or just have the urge to? I am pleased you won't and do keep a check on yourself, at least you've expressed how you are feeling on this forum, just try not to react or give into those voices.

Have a peaceful evening and catch up soon

Well, putting on a few extra pounds is easier to resolve than gambling. That’s the way I look at it.

Although I’m sure with all the running you do, that’s not possible.

Stay gamble free Annie. It’s the only way to be :)

Morning, hope all is well in the world of Annie.

Don't worry about snacking, your exercise routine will burn off any unwanted calories.

Really impressed with your positive attitude. Instead of thinking about what you can't have you have been looking at the opportunities open to you.

We are not immovable objects and by exploring all options available we can expand our horizons. There are things out there that will bring us peace and joy.

Take care and have a lovely weekend. I will soon raise my glass and toast your achievement. Nearly a complete month gamble free for Annie. Well done my friend...stephen x

Hi Annie, I replace gambling with jelly sweets and ciggies, I have a bag of harribo a day, I've become addicted and will have no teeth yet before long haha! You just enjoy yourself being gamble free, for me there is nothing wrong with treating yourself to some goodies every now and again, just don't do it every day, morning, lunch and tea time, otherwise I'll have to come along and squeeze you!

Have a lovely weekend and thanks for your ongoing support on my diary
