Identification and Intervention training

GamCare training

Since 1997, when GamCare was started, we have been involved in providing problem gambling training for clinicians, researchers, educators, policy makers, the gambling industry and professionals across all sectors. We have also been involved in providing problem gambling training and consultancy for governmental jurisdictions, including those in Asia at a time when access to gambling activities and venues was being expanded.

Our training aims

GamCare problem gambling training is specifically designed to:

  • Improve understanding of gambling and problem gambling behaviour and psychology
  • Increase awareness of the social impact of gambling and problem gambling
  • Provide the necessary skills to address the needs of those adversely affected by problem gambling

Our view

Our approach to problem gambling training is that problem gambling is a complex and multi-dimensional activity and problem gamblers cannot be simply classified as a homogeneous group. What makes a person prone to developing a gambling problem is multi-faceted and will depend upon the function gambling plays in their life. Problem gamblers will often use gambling as a way of managing difficult or threatening feelings and emotions. In their thinking they have a perceived expertness to gamble skillfully and distorted beliefs about the likelihood of winning money back. This then leads to persistence when losing and toleration of the impacts on themselves and others. Such a way of thinking and behaving is in distinct contrast to non-problem gamblers who see gambling as leisure and entertainment, enjoy the gambling experience, see it as a form of play and play with control.

How we train?

Our training programmes are interactive and build on the understanding and skills of the learners. They are all designed and delivered by highly experienced trainers who have extensive clinical experience of working with gamblers and problem gamblers and with those adversely affected by problem gambling. This combination of experience and expertise ensures that the training is of the highest quality and promotes effectiveness and excellence in working and supporting those with gambling related problems.
