Women gamble too
Gambling can be seen as a form of escape from the everyday pressures of life. It can be fun and exciting for a while lifting you out of the tedium of your usual routine whilst offering the added possibility of a 'big win'. It can also provide a welcome opportunity to socialise.
However, gambling can also result in increasing debt and spiral out of control. This may then be followed by the chasing of losses in the hope of, 'making it all right' though this is seldom the case.
Because women are generally seen to be nurturing, selfless and caring many women can experience enormous shame and guilt as they feel they are depriving not only themselves but their families, due to the gambling behaviour. This is a major factor for women struggling to acknowledge the seriousness of their problem. It can prevent you from facing up to it and from seeking help. The time may come when you do feel that you would like some support in making changes, and it is at this point that we can explore with you what choices are available.

Women only group sessions
Therapeutic group sessions for women take place each week in London, on Friday mornings and Thursday late afternoons. These groups are for women who have a problem with gambling, NOT for partners of problem gamblers. Groups have a maximum of 8 members, and in London are facilitated by our experienced GamCare counsellor Liz Karter. Some of our counselling partners in other parts of Britain also offer womens' groups - speak to advisers on the NetLine or HelpLine for more information.
