Lord Sharman GamCare President calls for the gambling industry to display the Freephone HelpLine number on all gambling advertising

At the House of Lord's last night Lord Sharman, President of GamCare, the leading provider of information, advice, support and free counselling for the prevention and treatment of problem gambling called on the gambling industry to display the Freephone HelpLine number 0808 8020 133 on all gambling advertising.

At the House of Lord's last night Lord Sharman, President of GamCare, the leading provider of information, advice, support and free counselling for the prevention and treatment of problem gambling called on the gambling industry to display the Freephone HelpLine number 0808 8020 133 on all gambling advertising. Lord Sharman expressed his gratitude for their voluntary contributions which have enabled GamCare to help many thousands of people.

The gambling industry displays the GamCare Freephone HelpLine number in all gambling venues. But for every problem gambler there are as many as eight other people adversely affected, family, friends, work colleagues and of course creditors. These people urgently need to know where to get help, and last night Lord Sharman asked the gambling industry to voluntarily put the GamCare Freephone HelpLine number on all gambling advertising. Operators who are properly licensed and accredited can then put their hands on their hearts and say ‘we have taken every reasonable action to ensure that gambling is safe as it can be and we hope fun’.

1. GamCare is the national provider of education, advice, practical help, support and treatment for anyone affected by problem gambling. Founded in 1997, the GamCare HelpLine receives nearly 100 calls a day with more than 85% of clients rating the service as “very good” or “excellent”.  In 2011/12 GamCare treated more than 2,700 clients. Around 90% of gamblers in treatment are assessed as problem gamblers; this reduces to around 30% at the end of treatment. GamCare’s return on investment is estimated at 7:1.

2. GamCare supports best practice within the gambling industry through training, GamCare Certification and consultation. GamCare Certification is an internationally recognised third party accreditation available for gaming, betting and lottery products across land-based, mobile gaming and internet platforms. GamCare training is face-to-face or via GamCare ExTra e-learning.
