Response to article in 'The Mail on Sunday'

STATEMENT BY BILL GALSTON OBE, CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF GAMCARE, IN RESPONSE TO THE ARTICLE IN ‘THE MAIL ON SUNDAY’

The Board of Trustees of GamCare has noted the article published in the Mail on Sunday on 14 November regarding super casinos. The allegations in the article that Professor Collins has been dismissed from his post as CEO of GamCare and that there is disagreement between him and any member of the Board regarding the Bill are completely false and untrue.

Professor Collins became CEO of GamCare early in 2004 on a one year contract pending the appointment of a full time CEO in early 2005. In accepting the post he made it clear that he did not wish to extend the appointment by more than that period.

The Board of Trustees welcomed his taking the post and believes that his extensive knowledge and expertise in the field of problem gambling has been of great benefit to the Charity. We do not believe that his Directorship of the Centre for the Study of Gambling has in any way compromised GamCare.

The Board of Trustees wish it to be known that Professor Collins has and always has had their full support, and is very grateful to him for his skill and hard work this year in support of the charity.

The Gambling Bill for the first time provides a framework to support comprehensive and effective measures for reducing the harm to those who lose control of their gambling activities. GamCare fully supports those provisions. Otherwise GamCare is and always has been gambling neutral.
