GamCare President
31 August 2010
Andrew McIntosh, President of GamCare for more than 5 years, has died at the age of 77. Lord McIntosh of Haringey became President shortly after leaving the Government for whom, as a DCMS Minister, he steered the 2005 Gambling Act through Parliament.
GamCare’s Chairman, Anthony Jennens, said:
“This is a very sad loss indeed. Andrew’s knowledge, enthusiasm and intellect were highly valued by all of us, and he made a great contribution to GamCare’s work and growth over the last five years. The cause of problem gambling has lost a terrific advocate and champion, and I personally have lost a true friend. Our thoughts are of course with his family at this sad time.”
Chief Executive Andy McLellan said:
“I had worked closely with Andrew on a number of different issues and projects at DCMS, and had always been impressed by his ability to master new subjects quickly and his keenness to find the right solution. I was delighted to work with him again at GamCare, where his forensic questioning of our own analysis and plans was matched only by his commitment to making a difference for problem gamblers”
GamCare Trustee Professor Peter Collins said:
"Andrew must have been the only British politician ever, en route to gambling conferences across Europe, to be found reading Proust – in French. His training as a market researcher led him to argue strongly for a strong research base, and he was rightly proud when he became Honorary Professor of Applied Social Theory at Salford University.”
