GamCare clarifies misquotation in Observer newspaper

18 January 2010

An article in yesterday’s Observer contained a controversial statement attributed to a GamCare Counsellor.

GamCare is dismayed that this article on the serious issue of problem gambling amongst women misquoted the GamCare counsellor and so misrepresented GamCare's position. What our counsellor said was that she certainly did not believe that the industry is a "demonic force".

GamCare is supported by and works closely with the online industry to improve player protection measures and there are many excellent examples of responsible gambling operators. What GamCare counsellors do is explore with each client the motivation behind their gambling behaviour in order to better understand it and to effect long-term recovery.
