Response to submission of bids for the third National Lottery licence

9 February 2007

GamCare notes the announcement by the National Lottery Commission (NLC) of its receipt today of two bids for the third operating licence for the National Lottery.

The NLC is responsible for deciding who will operate the National Lottery when the current licence expires in January 2009. The NLC has stated its commitment to a fair, open and transparent process, designed to attract high quality, credible bids to run one of the most successful lotteries in the world. It has also ranked its responsibilities - to ensure the National Lottery is run with all due propriety, to ensure players’ interests are protected and to maximise the income for ‘good causes’.

Geoffrey Godbold, Chief Executive of GamCare, said:

“The National Lottery is a world-leader in responsible play - and the first to receive GamCare accreditation - and it is critical that the licence competition ensures any future operator has a track record in protecting players from underage and excessive play and can deliver the highest standards of protection that have already been set in the UK.

“We hope that the NLC will continue to ensure that the existing high standards of corporate responsibility and protection measures evolve, where necessary, to reflect any proposals for new games, channels and technologies, particularly in the light of increasing competition for the National Lottery from a liberalised gambling sector.”
