When people come to the GamCare for the first time, one of their first questions is 'Is it possible to give up gambling?'.

This section aims to give people a sense that there could be a positive answer to that question, and to allow people to share and inspire others with their stories.

We encourage people to share their successes in this section and talk about life without gambling.

If you are at the start of your journey and would like to chart your progress, you might like to start in the Recovery Diaries section.

Thanks

Hi...this is an interesting point for me. What is success? When do gamble free days become a success?

I've got a decent tally of abstinent days but I'm very wary that once I've considered it a suceess, I'll want to reward myself by gambling.....complex mindset of a CG I suppose.

I'm not going to judge anyone here, but I'll continue to post in the recovery diaries as I see it as a constant, evolving recovery.

Gary makes a good point. I have personally known gamblers that have a year off gambling and have made massive strides forward in their lives, and others that have 15 years abstinence who then went back to it. Why?

It comes down to this: QUALITY over QUANTITY.

Abstinence (staying still) is one thing, a life with Recovery is another (which involves moving forward, growing, becoming who you were meant to be, becoming an asset to your relationship / family / work / community). Recovery helps insulate you from a return to old behaviours, and install new ones.
