Also good news mixer gamestop are looking for people to help with research for their online exclusion scheme which will help here's email address [email protected] there's a link in the new section on forum bit. Also this game awareness week by all betting shops seems abit desperate considering what fate could come out with them soon all seems a little late and just by them sticking no posters with prices is not enough.

Hi Mixer, thanks for your advice in chat last night. I phoned the self-exclusion number and I’m on the way to being self-excluded from all bookies within 3 miles of my house.

I’d like to be part of this challenge.

I’m 9 days GF at the moment, but do you start counting from today?

Raj - thank you for checking in and welcome back to the Challenge!

HDIGTT - a warm welcome to you, and, yes, if you want advice, just ask :)  we're all about supporting each other, so ask away.

Paull - welcome to the challenge. Great to chat to you last night and great you're taking meaningful positive action. Easy to talk the talk, but you're starting to walk the walk, my friend! You're on Day 9 and that's where you start. What matters is building up to Day 30, Striver level. Then we'll know if you mean business or not!

Thank you Christer for a great link and post there. And I agree with you, the bookies don't give a ***; this Reponsible Gambling Week is an irritation for them, they don't "care" about the problem (Per-leeeese!). Their advertising will be much improved, and strictly regulated,  online and in the shops, removing all the cynical deals "deposit £10 get £10 free" where it's nigh on impossible to cash out. Nevertheless, we must look after ourselves and not gamble anymore - it's bad for us.

Geo - thank you for checking in, duly noted :)

Slot Fool - welcome to our ranks and a fool no longer. Your aim - Striver status and 30 days without gambling. Fool or wise man who wants life, not misery? You know the answer to that!

Right. Lets enjoy the weekend. If you're skint because you've already ****ed your money away, then think about it, and say to yourself: I'm not doing this next month ... do you REALLY want to live like this? C'mon!

Mixer

P.S. I never intentionally use profanity in my posts. All asterisks are my own; reword them as you will ;) !

SATURDAY THOUGHTS

Raj - I'm so glad you qualified your previous e-mail because a bit fo me thought... did you fall off the wagon (hey, look it happens to all of us...), but I hoped you didn't. And, being more healthier and fitter, you're proving that the benefits of going gambling free are manyfold.

Thanks for checking in, Adam, Mark - great to see you're chalking up the days. Payday soon. Ready for it? (It's 'just another day' when you're gambling free, remember.) Of course you are.

The objective of this thread is to will each other on, with a well-intended, intelligent, empathetic intent, backed up by common sense, pragmatism and a good baseline understanding and appreciation of this condition. It respects that we all have different ways of dealing with this; the maxim: "Whatever works for you". Some posters on here will say their way is the only way, almost messianical, and it is their right, but I respectfully disagree. Sometimes these posters will get controversial, personal and downright irritating; but personally I just brush them off like flies, just swat them away. They soon buzz off if you stand up to them. That said, if their way works for them, I wish them the best of luck; back to the maxim: "Whatever works for you.".

But this Challenge on its own will be, for most people, nowhere near enough and none of us must pretend it is. 'Willpower' will only get you so far before buckling; this is because the gambling devil on our shoulders is a patient demon and will strike as soon a weakness is found.

The are two areas that need to be dealt with, therefore. One, a change of mindset, realising that gambling is bad for us. Sounds obvious when I write it like that, but it is incredibly destructive to us, and our loved ones. Writing on the forums, counselling, joining GA, confiding in friends and family, working out the underlying reasons for the gambling are same ways that must be considered. And two, practical measures to ensure we can't gamble, like passing financial control to trusted friends and loved ones. Banning yourself from bookies, casinos and arcades; this can be done with a couple of phone calls.

If you rely on this Challenge alone, you'll more than likely fail, although I really hope you succeed. This assertion is borne out by the facts, which are, based on this Challenge, and the Challenge I ran before, what I call "the rule of 3".

  • One third of us will drop out of the Challenge, and posting on Gamcare, never to be seen again.
  • One third of us will hold their hands up to a relapse and try again, and keep posting
  • One third of us will, day by day, reach successful targets and keep going; but I am sure most people in that third will have taken other measures, rather than just the Challenge alone.

Which 'third' are you going to be in? (And before you think I'm "holier than thou", I've been in all three. For the first one, I disappeared, but have come back after several months).

Aim for the successful third. And if you have relapsed, ask why and put measures in places to stop that weak spot being breached again!

Right, that's my post rattled out ... took me 12 mins exactly, I dont hang about -  but hopefully my musings are helpful to you.

A happy, gambling free weekend everyone.

Keep strong Geo. Life will always throw stuff at us; my goodness the problems I've had with old flames (and them with me to be fair!)

The point is not to find an excuse to gamble. That will just make things worse and what's the point of that?

Keep strong my friend. Remember what's at stake here.

Good Evening

Interesting to read of the idea of a third of us being successful. Hoping I'm in that third this time around . I always worry about when my next weakness will strike, usually as they say when least expected I guess.

Anyway I'll be on alert for that and hope I can continue fighting the urges when they come. As you say Mixer it is important to keep reminding ourselves of the destruction and misery gambling inevitably causes. I'm two weeks into quitting now and some days have been pretty easy as my mindset is clear that gambling is financially and emotionally putting me in a hell hole every time I tell myself I'll just have a small gamble. Ive proved I cannot gamble in a sensible way time and time again... This time it has to be different.

Over half way to Striver ... the name is a good one as I have struggled daily to keep gf. This is hard to do - for some reason much harder than before ... I got to nearly 200 days last year but then placing a single bet for someone else and I was back gambling for nearly 8 months, losing many £k's in the process. As a serial relapser I wonder if I will ever succeed. Anyway, struggling on and keeping busy. I know which third I am in at the moment!

** GURU CHALLENGE -  9th WEEKLY ROLLCALL!  ***

It's Sunday 15th October – time for our rollcall!

Here we are once again. Let’s see how we’re all doing at the mid-way point of the month.

  • Are you RESTED? Have you disappeared from the forums for a few weeks; if so, you are taken off the Challenge. We wish you luck!
  • Are you RELAPSING? It happens, but you’ve been honest enough to admit it. Make sure you’re putting in place extra steps right now … else it will happen again and you’ll get nowhere
  • Or are you ROCKING? Still gambling free? Superb… keep living the life you should; not misery!

This week, my updates for you will simply state if you are RESTED, or RELAPSED (but ‘back in the saddle’) or ROCKING.

ROLLCALL OF HONOUR!

Hitting DOUBLE ELDER status is Degenerate – 200 days – fantastic result; hat’s off Degen! And step forward Antics – shashing through the 50 day mark. Half way to ELDER; good stuff!

NEW CHALLENGERS!

We welcome Tooshie (16 days), Ineffable (16 days too), Mitch91 (14 days), Slotfool (28 days), Paulll (11 days) ajnd HowDidIGetToThis (175 days) to the Challenge. Welcome aboard our Super Six!

STATS FOR NERDS

We have 2 GURUs, 5 ELDERs, 9 STRIVERs and 10 NEWBIEs on the Challenge – 26 in total. In addition, 2 members have been ‘rested’ from the Challenge. Raj has rejoined us – Yay!

Are you RESTED, RELAPSING or ROCKING…? Let’s find out!

Our GURUs

Phil72 – 614 days – ROCKING! Keeping it on track

Changemylife – 352 days – ROCKING! Showing us how it’s done

ELDERs

Degenerate – 201 days – ROCKING! Double ton up

HowDidIGetToThis175 days – ROCKING! An ELDER joins us

Abstainer –  157 days – ROCKING! Get well soon, my friend!

ItMatters – 135 days – ROCKING! Cruising without complacency

Sars27 – 135 days -  ROCKING! Livin’ the dream!

4D – 39 – ROCKING! Following good steps!

Athena1991 38 – ROCKING! It’s because you care about you and yours :)

NEWBIES

Slotfool - 28 days - ROCKING! – Keep strong, and stronger!

Adam808 – 19 days – ROCKING! Excellent progress

Xenedra – 18 days – ROCKING! Meaning it, this time

Ineffable - 16 days too - ROCKING! – Hit STRIVER, Ok?

Geo15 days – ROCKING! Don’t let distractions give you an excuse

Boxingdayfresh14 days – ROCKING! Good, good.. half way to STRIVER

Tooshie - 14 days – ROCKING! – Show us you mean this

Mitch91 - 14 days - ROCKING! – Prove you mean this

Paulll - 11 days - ROCKING! Reaching STRIVER will prove your intentions

Helpless  (Previously ‘Next Steps’)  - 5 days – RELAPSED Make sure you put EXTRA blockers and support measures in place, my friend. Let’s break the cycle!

RESTING

No-one rested this week!

So… we’re all pretty much ROCKING! Although… I’m not that surprised to be honest if you’re a NEWBIE because you may well be skint anyway – it is mid-month, after all. When ‘payday’ comes along in the next couple of weeks, let’s see if you can keep ROCKING! It truly is the only way. Keep getting that support and put those blocks in place...!

FINAL THOUGHT.

Sometimes we don't appreciate, despite all of the troubles life can bring, how lucky we are to have even been born. Are we really going to waste our 'golden ticket' of life gambling it all away? We're better than that. Take a look at this. http://www.stevezervos.com/birth-lottery.htm

Let’s keep strong; keep sharing and keep strong!

Mixer and Athena, your hosts for this challenge

Thanks for checking in, everyone. Payday soon; so even more reason to be strong and remember what this is all about. Living a much, much better life. Not living guaranteed misery. Are we men (or women), or mice?

I know the answer. You know the answer. We're doing this, and doing it properly. Don't let yourselves down.

Would you be letting me, a totally anonymous stranger who happens to be hosting a 'Challenge' on here, down, too?

Yes, you would.

I would be disappointed. Because I care. It matters!

(P.S. TomS - welcome to the Challenge. Great to have you aboard!)

Raj - delighted to hear your update; delete any bonus e-mails right away, remember - gambling's no good!

*** New Challenge! ***

Eagle-eyed forum watchers will have noticed a new challenge has appeared - the Christmas Challenge! It's run by Neveragain2016 (previously 30thSept) who ran the 3 month challenge earlier in the year. He's a good chap - and you'll read from his bio his intent and what matters to him. And with 400 days gambling-free and counting, he recognises the importance of a continued, resolute, gambling-free strategy.

I think the Christmas Challenge is a great idea; all you need to do is post "I'm in" or similar, post an update once a week, and strive to become gambling free for Christmas (the challenge concludes on 31st Dec). Can you do it? Of course .. and beyond  - but one day at a time, with manageable milestones.

I thoroughly recommend it - I'm in! Why not join, another boost to our gambling-free amoury!

And lets not forget the grand-daddy of the Challenges, the pre-eminent 2017 Challenge. Run for many years, this is the long-term beasty to which we all aspire. You'll see some people with years of valuable gambling-free life behind them, yet they still recognise the importance of keeping those safeguards in place, one day at a time. I'm a member of that too!

Just for once, just for once - let's have the Christmas we, and our long-suffering loved ones and friends, deserve, eh? It's not just the money side of it, it's the person we want to be, and the person we want others so see. Let's be happier, much happier and roll with life's punches in a far positive, constructive way without the overhead of ceaseless, stress-inducing, wallet-sapping betting. Sod the bloody gambling. Consign it to history.

This was a previous phase of our lives; we've grown out of it now (and, bearing in mind I'm 48, it's taken me a while).

Onwards we go!

Congratulations on your healthy 68 days gf. You show such positivity and understanding in the fight against this addiction.

Also your support for others is invaluable, especially for those who come to this forum without a purposeful direction or action plan.

Keep up the good work and just remember to take some time out for yourself - we all need a bit of 'Me Time'.

Changemylife - thank you for your kind words. I'm monitoring your GF total, actually, you seem to be approaching an interesting milestone :)

Rest assured I'm taking plenty of 'time out' - I only post 2 or 3 times a day, generally, and my weekly update on Sunday takes me half an hour or so (it's all automated!). And whilst I attend most Chatrooms I really enjoy meeting and talking to others, it's very cathartic.

A fellow recovering gambler here on the forums recently hit 1 year, but sadly had a blip the next day (but resolutely back in GF mode now!). I hope you have a plan to sail through your milestone, WHEN you hit it, and beyond, changemylife :)

I wish you, as always, all the very best, changemylife.

CHRISTMAS STARTS HERE.

Thank you everyone who has checked in and commented over the last few days; all read, noted and shared with our group - all adds to our resolve!

For many of us, payday's coming.

But, remember, as recovering gamblers, gambling-free one day at a time, it's just another day.

So don't be fazed by it, don't feel you have to waste all of the money ... because you don't.

For once, let us ALL on the Guru challenge not spend a penny on gambling.

Now, I'm gong to say the C word. Yup, Christmas; usually a depressing time of year because we are normally skint.

This year will be different. Whilst some of us might not be exactly rolling in cash, what with debts that need paying, we'll have more 'spare'.

Which means a better Christmas for ourselves and loved ones, showing we care about them, too.

A nicer Christmas dinner? Sorted? A few extra treats? Sorted. Excuses for delivering another **** Christmas? Not this year.

Ok, payday coming up. Let's see what we're all made of!

And seriously consider joining the Christmas Challenge :)

Sorry to hear that Slot Fool - but good to see you back here and starting again - most of us have been there unfortunately.

Day 20 for me and doing ok - last week was a real struggle but this week has been a bit easier - a bit of distance from gambling and getting out of the habit is starting to pay dividends.

Hi Slot Fool - as Ineffable has said, we've all been there. Having means to money, and availability to gambling, leads to this when the spirit is weak and the gambling demon spots a way through. It's time to revisit your armoury, and plug the gaps.

Ineffable -  it's very tough when we start out. But you're more than hanging in there. Do you care? Yes... so keep it going :)

Geo - excellent; really great to read. Doing really well my friend.

Wallywierd - I'm liking your sentiment; want to join the Challenge :)

Now... I've had a bit of a blow today; my job role's changing and I'm going to take a financial bit - quite a big one (-£10k)

Now, I have to remember that life is going to throw stuff at me whatever.  But being gambling free I can deal with it better, rather than making it worse.

Am I allowed to be p*ssed off? Hell, yeah. I am. It's a blow. And I'm going to have a pint or two. But  not gamble. Or drink too much. And I'll bear in mind my loved ones; it's not their fault and shouldn't bear the brunt of how I'm feeling.

Mixer, really sorry to hear that. It's struggle enough to get by at the moment so any pay cuts (downward movement in renumeration!) would floor me; so I truly feel for you my friend.  But, as you say, not gambling does help from falling into the abyss of huge debts and no funds.  Hope you can make your way to a better paid role/career over the next year.

Thanks, Ineffable; I really appreciate that mate. I, like you, am a "No Bull**** Bertie"; I always say it as it is. But, like everybody else in these difficult times, we have to get on with it and steer a path through. It really is a dog eat dog world, that is the brutal reality, which I accept.

Thank goodness I stopped gambling when I did. Is there ever a good time? Yes, there is, everyone: NOW. Why make whatever life throws at you - and it will - worse?

Ineffable; thank you once again.
