Hi Adam and delighted you've put extra safeguards in place. Your target this month is a realistic and manageable one; not to spend 1p on gambling. Remember , you don't have to gamble - you can live a much better life, instead of putting yourself and others through misery.

With you all the way, shoulder to shoulder Adam!

Light-heartedly but with a serious undertone I have hit double guru status!

Almost 21 months ago I made a decision to stop gambling and some how I have managed to stick with it despite initially having no confidence that I could stop even for a day.

2016 was a very tough year for my wife and I with bereavement, my operation, her health problems and family issues but we got through it as a team which would not have happened if I had continued to gamble.

I always remember my mum explaining to me how she managed to stop smoking - she talked about manageability and taking it one day at a time.

I have used the same approach to gambling - ODAAT to me is not an empty expression or sloganeering or something I got from a meeting. I've also had a lot of support from specific forum users - thank you.

I've made a lot of mistakes, said things here I shouldn't have, reacted to provocation from people who should know better but hopefully in my own clumsy way have supported and encouraged other forum users.

This post is not a commemoration at all - just recognising as a double guru how far I've come since February 2016.

Best wishes, Phil.

** GURU CHALLENGE -  7th WEEKLY ROLLCALL!  ***

It's Sunday 1st October – time for our fortnightly rollcall!

As we enter a new month – and I rather like this time of year; autumnal sunsets, the leaves falling in their vibrant colours… still relatively mild – let’s see how we’re all getting on having hit the biggest temptation for many of us – payday. On the premise that it’s easy to stop when we’re skint, this is a big test from which there is no hiding.

I speak, like many of us, from bitter experience. There’s no sanctimony or pious sermon from me – I’ve been neck-deep with this gambling menace for years. Only now I’m I giving it my best shot ever, like all of us, doing anything to be free of this (which we can be, so long as we understand why it’s so bad for us, put comprehensive blockers in place, seek help and support where we can, and vow, daily if needs be, that today we won’t place one bet.) One bet is all it takes and the gambling devil will tempt us at any turn; it will make us find any excuse, however flimsy, to trip that switch.

Talking of practical steps, there are a host of things we can do straightaway. If you are able to deal any of the following (and there might be legitimate reasons why not), then – why not? Whilst in this world there is help out there, we have to help ourselves too. And if we’re not doing all we reasonably can ‘our end’, then, sadly, we might be limiting our chances of success – and fail.

  1. Read a gambling self-help book. Allan Carr is recommended, and there are others. They are available on Kindle. Self-help books don’t work for everyone but there are always some words that will chime with you. And, who knows, might help to change or  challenge your gambling mindset. If you’re not reading a book, for £3 .50 on Kindle, and there’s nothing stopping you, then – why?
  2. Seeking counselling. There may be reasons why this isn’t possible; location/availability or it truly isn’t your thing. But if your true conscience knows it might be helpful to talk about things, what’s stopping you?
  3. Passing control of your money supply to someone else. If you have a trusted friend, partner or family member who you know you will be only too happy to help, then why are you not protecting your finances? It’s not a sign of weakness, or emasculating for those chaps who think so – it’s a sign of strength. Worth considering?
  4. Self-exclusion to bookies, casinos and online gaming. If it’s reasonable for you to do this, and you haven’t, then why not? Don’t rely on willpower. In fact, our willpower’s fantastic; it enables us to be very cunning as gamble when our spirits are weak! Hence why we need these defensive measures. Might this really help you ...?

Just 4 things on the top of my head. There are many more! Ok, on with the rollcall proper.

STATS FOR NERDS: We have 2 GURUs, 4 ELDERs, 6 STRIVERs and 6 NEWBIEs on the Challenge – 18 in total. No-one rested this week :)

ROLLCALL OF HONOUR!

Phil72 – 600 days – Not content with being a Guru, Phil has doubled-down with a fantastic 600 days gambling free under his belt. Our hearty congratulations Phil, and look forward to you reaching Triple Guru status, one day at a time, in due course!  Bravo!

Chartom3 – 35 days – Our latest STRIVER joins the determined bunch gracing this echelon. A really great achievement breaking out of the NEWBIES. Next step ELDER!

Updates: Starting with our fellow GURU

Changemylife – 338 days - … Heading for a calendar year gambling free… doing just fine.

ELDERs

Degenerate – 187 days – Hitting half a year a few days back, steady as you sail Degen.

Abstainer –  143 days – Always a joy visiting your website Stephen with a different song selection pretty much every day! Keeping us all in tune.

ItMatters – 121 days – Love your post about Talksport – heavy sponsored by gambling – talking about responsible gambling. I reckon it was interesting picking the bones out of that, ItMatters.

Sars27 – 121 days -  Keeping it real, keeping it fun! And who said gambling free doesn’t have to be fun (it can be, and is!)

STRIVERs

RubyBaby –  65 days – Checking in almost two-thirds on the way to ELDER status. You refer to the value of a support network and your strong family … putting solid foundations in place has to help.

Mixer – 51 days -  In ‘Hawaii’ yesterday and a different ‘area’ today! Thank you for all your kind good wishes.

Amt722 – 45 – Your philosophy of one day at a time is spot on and, not just that, you’re choosing life, not misery. This is what it’s all about.

Raj – 43 – Haven’t heard from you Raj, hoping all is well  with you, my friend.

Antics – 42 Great to hear from you Antics and delighted you’re still on track for a better life that’s started, is happening and will continue to happen.

Chartom3 – 35 – Absolutely delighted to add you to the STRIVER ranks. It means you’re dealing with the big temptation – payday. Speaks volumes for you, Chartom, have no doubt whatsoever.

NEWBIES

Adam808 – 5 days – Last week you had a blip, were honest about it and have put in place immediate remedial action – what a great response Adam! Onwards and upwards I really sense.

4D – 25 – Setting goals to really cement your progress is a great idea. The gym is a great place to (re)focus your mind, and you may well find writing your stories on here surprisingly cathartic.

Athena1991 – 24 days – Bouncing back from your blip Athena, you have excluded yourself from your local arcades, in addition to the bookies, to ensure that the cunning side of your brain is increasingly thwarted of opportunity! Doing great.

Xenedra – 4 days – I’ve spent some time reading your diary Xenedra and know you’re really going through it. My goodness I’ve been there and I’m sure many of us too. You are really seeking solutions and from anywhere. You are back in the saddle again and you know can’t keep living like this. We are all SO with you.

Next Step – 14 days – You’ve seen your poker league through to completion, winning the pub trophy (congrats!) and have taken the interim measure of offering cash to anyone who sees you gamble. But now, poker over, it’s time for the next step. Simply telling yourself, day by day, you will not gamble. Temptation will always be lurking and now it’s time to bite the bullet – and knock the poker on the head. Your instincts will agree; this phase of your life needs to come to an end… don’t be sad, be happy .. that you’re moving on to a much happier, gambling-free, new phase.

Mark SNB – 10 days – Great to hear you’re looking into getting counselling. It’ll really help you! Do let us know how you’re getting on if you’d like to!

Let’s keep strong; keep sharing and keep strong!

Mixer and Athena, your hosts for this challenge

Hi Christer,

Thank you for your post. You're doing excellent on 44 days. I am not surprised you still have gambling thoughts; so do I. But don't be afraid of these thoughts; remember that you are free of gambling the moment you stop. Feel happy, relieved and upbeat that you are not doing this any more!

And look at the real you that's stepping out the shell. More positive, understanding, and better to be around.

Not the het up, insular, closed, shouty person of old.

Bring gambling free certainly makes us richer. As a person. As an aside, the money situation happens to improve too!

Try not to see the next milestone as foreboding, whether 50 or 100 days, Christer. One day at a time, just take it nice and easy.

All the very best my friend.

Day Six for me

Hello Mixer and Athena

I've just discovered your challenge and I'd like to join as a NEWBIE.

I'm in the 2017 challenge but it really doesn't feel right being there any more as I've joined and rejoined countless times this year with limited success. I feel that's more a place for those who've abstained for the longer term.

I first joined gamcare 2014 and was at one point doing well - I don't think I made a full year ... but I wasn't far off. I even used to help run the 2016 Challenge at one point (may have been 2015 can't remember !). I felt quite secure in staying stopped at that point. This year has yet been another rubbish year in terms of gambling. I'd estimate I've wasted close to £2000 these past six months or so. That's an estimate ... in reality I have no clue. But I know I'm plunging deeper into debt and should be climbing out of debt. My initial plan back in 2014 was to be debt free by 2019. With a huge push now and ditching the gambling forever from now on, that goal could be still achieved by approximately 2020. Im going to go for it and give it the biggest effort I've ever given it. I am in despair every time I lose a load of money - piling it into those slots. I really can't bear to have my life ruled by this addiction any longer. I'd say it has been close to 10 years now and enough is enough. I can beat this and I will beat this!!

So please, if you'd allow me to join you all and say goodbye to gambling and hello to abstaining I'd like to join the GURU challenge and make a promise that I'll become a GURU too! I'm determined and I know I can do it with the right mindset.

It's Saturday night as I write; another 1 day deposit made in the Gambling Free 'bank' - 57 days for me. I'm hoping everyone on our Challenge is keeping strong, what with a payday just passed. Remember, it's easy to go gambling free when you're skint. But even if you are, these days count, because they build up your GF bank, and the higher your total goes, the more determined you'll be to build it ever higher. To be a STRIVER (30 days GF) is our our first target. This proves you can successfully navigate a payday.

Remember - no man (or lady) is an island. To stop gambling, day by day, needs help and suport, as well as willpower and/or a mindset that recognises that gambling is no good for us. It's not actually a 'choice' of whether to gamble or not - because who in their right mind would choose a life of continued misery? However, we can right our minds, with a will to succeed and thought-out strategies to support that determination.

Geo - welcome aboard; look out for the weekly rollcall tomorrow!

Boxingdayfresh - you're exactly right; we've got to get our mindsets right. Welcome to our challenge, let's get you to STRIVER level, that's 30 days consecutive gambling free days. Let's see what you're made of. You've done it before, you can bl**dy well do it again.

Adam, Christer, 4D - thank you for checking in; your progress duly happily noted ;)

To everyone - here's a book I recommend. For £3.70, it's worth a look, surely...

https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00EZSK6PM/ref=dp-kindle-redirect?_encoding=...

Even if the book helps you 'only' 5%, that's another 5% of valuable resolve for the price of a pint or small glass of wine. And what if it helps you 100%? (Oh, and in case you, or Gamcare, are wondering: no, I'm not on commission; it's just a straightforward link.)

FINAL THOUGHT - Has your life gone wrong because you're gambling, or are you gambling because your life has gone wrong... have you ever thought WHY you gamble...?

Enjoy your weekend everyone - full rollcall tomorrow!

** GURU CHALLENGE -  8th WEEKLY ROLLCALL!  ***

It's Sunday 8th October – time for our fortnightly rollcall!

So, here we are, one or two weeks past pay-day, for those of us paid monthly. Are you keeping strong, one day at a time – or have you relapsed, and living yet another month of miserable penury... we so hope not, but with you if you stumble (it's happened to me...)? Our rollcall will reveal all.

But firstly, here’s some news that most of us will find bittersweet. The sweet bit is that the Gaming Commission, backed by the Government, is planning a major crackdown of the gaming industry. And bitter, because we have all sadly been affected by this; however, as recovering gamblers we can at least take an interest in what’s happening.

To cut a long story short, the Gaming Commission is showing some teeth at long last. It has demonstrated its credentials recently fining an online casino £8m for allowing players that have previously self-excluded themselves back to gamble again. Other online casinos have been quickly scrambling to update their software ever since…

Measures that the GC are taking as part of the triannual (3yr) review include, as most of us will be aware, taming the crack-******* of gambling, FOBTs. Their focus is on the max stake and frequency of spin. Currently, the max stake is a ludicrous £100 (£300 per minute at the current rate of 3 spins per minute). Campaigners are looking at a max bet of £2 per spin, bringing them in line with other comparative gambling.

Most amusingly, one of the big bookies went ‘off message’ calling for the max bet to be dramatically reduced to at least £10. The other bookies went up in arms at this – now knowing full well the game is truly up. The first bookies weren’t being entirely altruistic; most of their profits are made online, so they could afford to cast their land-based bookies adrift a little and cause a bit of bother to the larger opposition. But, anyway, a big step in the right direction.

The GC are casting their eyes to the online world too. They’ve noticed, as we all have for a long time, it’s turned into the “Wild West’. Lots of generous offers like “Deposit £10 get £30 free” seem good, but the Ts & Cs make it virtually impossible to cash out a profit – for example, you’d have to play through that money something like 50 times, which was never going to happen in practice.

And online affiliates, especially on Youtube and other channels, are always seemingly winning on their slot and roulette channels, making the gambling proposition even more enticing. The truth is that these players are playing games set at over 100% payout, in cahoots with the operators. It’s the real players that, as usual, get shafted. The hosts of these channels are appearing a little sullen of late...!

The GA is looking to stop these sharp practices, and you’ll see all the major casino affiliates closing down as the casinos are fast realising they will be rightfully hung out to dry if any affiliate misbehaves.

And finally, to complete this ‘perfect storm’; whisper it – have you noticed a few bookies are starting to close? Yes, it’s true. Why, you may wonder. Well, I think the reason is quite simple in my opinion; so many compulsive gamblers have got into serious financial difficulty (and therefore unable to gamble much more) the bookies are finding it difficult to replace them, there aren’t enough new gamblers coming through. And whilst that's my opinion, I believe this not to be far off the mark when you 'join the dots'. And with the new measures, stopping such sharp practice, it isn’t going to get any easier for them to draw in a new generation of addicts, in my humble view.

So the winds of change are blowing, my friends. It will be interesting to see if the GC - and their Government paymasters - hold their nerve, or buckle like they have done in the past. Fingers crossed.

Talking of holding our nerve; how are we all doing this week?

WELCOME!

Boxingdayfresh and Geo – welcome to this challenge! Both NEWBIES, your immediate target is STRIVER. I sense from reading your blogs you’ve had enough of all this **** and, day to day, get there. Interesting reading about your GA meeting, Geo; and how similar all of our stories are, basically.

STATS FOR NERDS: We have 2 GURUs, 4 ELDERs, 7 STRIVERs and 5 NEWBIEs on the Challenge – 18 in total. In addition, 2 members have been ‘rested’ from the Challenge.

ROLLCALL OF HONOUR!

Abstainer –  150 days – Congratulations on not only becoming half a GURU (does that make you a Goo, or a Roo?) but on having one of the most enjoyable dairies I’ve read, with an (almost) daily song choice to listen to for good measure. We collectively give you a deserved ripple of applause!

4D – 32 – It is of immense joy to add you to our STRIVER ranks 4D, because it is the first  ‘promotion’ up the ranks and means you have dealt with a number of temptations including likely availability of cash. You can rightfully feel proud. And now, it’s serious as you, day by day, get to hallowed ELDER status. Our hearty congratulations to you 4D!

Athena1991 – 31 days – My Challenge partner-in-crime has become a STRIVER too! This is a really important moment Athena and shows the inner strength that you have. At a time, when there’s a bit more cash floating around, you’re proving to yourself, and others, that you care not just for you, but for them, too. We are all delighted!

Updates

Phil72 – 607 days – Not content with being a double GURU Phil is marching towards triple GURU status! Leading the pack Phil, and living a life, not misery!

Changemylife – 345 days - … Cruising steadily towards a certain milestone but never taking your eye off the ball.

ELDERs

Degenerate – 194 days – Someone else with a milestone in mind but keeping that focus.

Abstainer –  150 days – Treble Bull by never any Bull in how you’re approaching this.

ItMatters – 128 days – Great to read you’re enjoying life. And racking up those days, day to day to eternity.

Sars27 – 128 days -  Living life, travelling the world, appreciating and sharing what you have with those you love. This is what it’s truly about.

STRIVERs

RubyBaby –  72 days – Chalking up a fantastic total Rubybaby … let’s keep it going, day by day!

Mixer – 58 days -  ‘Tis I. Clocking up, one day at a time, with meaningful blockers in place.

Amt722 – 52 – Doing this with willpower alone; some say it’s not easy to do, but it’s working for you and its showing your true character. Don’t waver. We’re watching and willing you on, you know that.

Antics – 49 Great to hear from you Antics and one off the ‘Hawaii’. You mean this; I truly sense it.

Chartom3 – 42 – Genuinely delighted to see you eat up more days with the distinct intention of becoming an ELDER. We’re all shoulder to shoulder with you, Chartom.

4D – 32 – Our latest Striver No.1!

Athena1991 – 31 - Our fellow latest Striver No.2!

NEWBIES

Next Step – 21 days – Haven’t heard from you for a week or so, Next Stop – hope you’re keeping strong. Let us know – remember, we’re here, we care and we do our utmost to help keep you on track, even if you fall off!

Adam808 – 12 days – Great to see you ‘back in the saddle’ and you know the biggest challenges are to come. Let’s see you hit STRIVER status Adam. Let’s see you really mean this.

Xenedra – 11 days – Back on board Xenedra and I know that you’re living another skint month and life’s just drifting by… but not this month. This month, this payday, its going to be different. This can’t continue: you know this. But we’re with you!

Boxingdayfresh7 days – Let’s see what you’re made of…!

Geo8 days – Likewise, let’s see your true intentions!

RESTING

Raj – I’m resting you Raj – haven’t heard from you awhile - but hope all’s well. Drop us a post and you’ll be back on the Challenge!

Mark SNB – I’ve rested you Mark, ditto. Do let us know if you’d like to continue on the Challenge.

Let’s keep strong; keep sharing and keep strong!

Mixer and Athena, your hosts for this challenge.

P.S. If anyone wants to join us, just drop us a line. We don't profess to have any formal expertise with how to stop gambling; it's all from the University of Life. Hence why this thread doesn't get bogged down with gambling theory and associated psychology; so we're not one for the purists! There are plenty of other threads here that entertain such matters in considerable detail; and its certainly very interesting and enlightening. In respect of this Challenge, we come in from a simple, but hopefully useful and helpful angle courtesy of the twin angels of positivity and encouragement :)

*** HERE'S A THOUGHT ***

It can be tough to keep on the Gambling Free path. Sometimes, words don't move you. Sometimes, what a loved one or friend says doesn't move you. But maybe, on those occasions where doubt and weakness is trying to surface, maybe the power of music might move you.

Here's a track that reminds you of how things have been, for too long. Let the lyrics move you. Warn you. And help guide you to a better life.

At moments of weakness - music is a marvellous bastion of strength.

(Selected lyrics follow...)

I was left to my own devices
Many days fell away with nothing to show

And the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills, bringing darkness from above

But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?
How am I going to be an optimist about this?
How am I going to be an optimist about this?

We were caught up and lost in all of our vices
In your pose as the dust settled around us
And the walls kept tumbling down in the city that we love
Great clouds roll over the hills, bringing darkness from above
But if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like nothing changed at all?
And if you close your eyes
Does it almost feel like you've been here before?

Music has enormous power; be sure to visit Abstainer's thread, with regular tracks to help keep us all on track.

Lovely to get a mention on the Roll Call. Checking in on day 8 and here to go none stop to get to Guru. I know I can go for it and get there, first aiming to get Striver. Thank you Mixer for running this forum and doing the detailed updates. It's clear it must take a lot of your time and effort. But it's definitely worthwhile when you consider how many people you're helping. Hope you're also doing well on your mission to remain gamble free.

I really feel this is my time to do it. Enough messing around trying to quit, I'm going to prove to myself I can crack this stupid nonsensical addiction that defies all logic.

Best wishes to you all

Tooshie1961 - Welcome to the Challenge. As I'm fond of saying: let's see what you're made of!

Geo - congratulations for your double digits: day by day, let's get you to STRIVER status. The status that shows you mean business.

Thank you mixer. I honestly can say that gambling has me beat and I am helpless against it. So I am going to stay well away. Day 10 and the urge set in but called a member from GA and we have spoken for half an hour. Now relieved as I did not go to bookies. One day at a time. For now time for bed and ready for work later.

Good, Geo but you need to ban yourself from the bookies immediately. There's a number you can phone, if you search the forums you will find it. You must do this. Willpower will only get you so far; trust me, and you know this all too well.

Hi everyone.... mind if I join.  I have struggled for over 3 years to stop this addiction. I am now on day 12 and am taking it one step at a time. It's been a tough start and still really shakey but have kept free from the roulette table (my nemesis).  Hoping this challenge can help me focus on staying gf.

Thank you guys,

I am going to do the self exclusion today, I am serious about this thing before I have not even considered it. But now this thing has me beat and I see that the only way move on with my life is to seek all the help available in kicking this habit. Will power alone has not helped as I had not gambled for almost a year but just in september when for no real reason I  gave into the urge I lost so much as lost money saved up to start my future away from family home.

Sorry for the rambling but it helps clears my mind.

Day 11 check in GF free. Currently on the phone to self exclusion people but I keep being disconnected as there is no operator to take my call.

Ineffable - welcome to the Challenge and making a great start with 12 days under your belt. Let's see you, day by day, get to STRIVER level; that's 30 days and proves you can deal with a monthly payday. Remember, you DON'T have to **** it up the wall this month. You can enjoy the month, enjoy the money, and not have to give it away!

Christer1 - great to see you hitting the big 5-0. I've posted on your thread.

Geo - the phone might be engaged but that's not going to stop you. Keep trying mate!!!!
