Education and prevention
GamCare continues to develop education and prevention strategies for young people, to increase awareness and educate about the risks associated with gambling. We also provide direct support to young people experiencing a gambling problem.
BigDeal - information and guidance for young people
In November 2012, GamCare launched the BigDeal website, specifically designed for young people aged 12-18, to provide information about the risks commonly associated with gambling. The site also offers support and advice for young people experiencing a gambling problem, and is an essential resource for engaging with young people and helping to make responsible decisions.
The ‘Your Say’ section of the site provides an opportunity for young people to describe their experiences with gambling and offer advice to others. Interactive quizzes give young people the chance to find out how much they know about gambling and determine whether they might have a gambling problem.
The website provides answers to frequently asked questions on topics as legal gambling ages, gambling on social networks and the seriousness of a gambling addiction. Three short films have also been produced as site content to educate young people about gambling and how it might affect someone they know.
Community Youth Education - Pilot Project
Working in partnership with our treatment partner the Addiction Recovery Agency (ARA), we recently delivered our first community education pilot project in the Bristol area.
The project provided gambling awareness workshops for young people in colleges and schools across Bristol. In addition, young people experiencing a gambling problem were offered advice, information and treatment.
